Kolkata: The Vice Chancellor of Aliah University, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, was attacked by an expelled student, who is a former leader of the Trinamool Congress student wing, and his followers.

The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on Saturday April 2.

In the video, Vice Chancellor Mohammad Ali can be seen facing humiliation, verbal abuses and assault threats by the expelled student, Giasuddin Mondal and his followers.

Mondal has been identified as a former Unit President of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad.

He was said to be agitated over his expulsion from the university. On Saturday, it was also revealed that the tenure of the Vice Chancellor would be extended, which irritated Mondal further.

He barged into the chamber of the Vice Chancellor, hurled abuses and even threatened to physically assault him.

The Vice Chancellor fell ill and was later taken to a hospital. Ali alleged that despite making repeated calls to the police, the forces did not reach at the time of the incident.

The police is yet to file a formal FIR.

The university authorities have convened an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the issue.

The development has created ripples in the educationist and intellectual circles of the State. Several luminaries from the education, literary and cultural circles have demanded Mondal’s immediate arrest, as well as legal action.

The ruling party leaders have, however, started distancing themselves from the development.

The party’s General Secretary Kunal Ghosh that the Trinamool Congress leadership does not endorse such actions and that too against any teacher.

“I can assure that the matter will be looked into and action will be taken against the accused,” Ghosh added.

However, Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad president Trinankur Bhattacharya has denied any association with the accused.

“The accused, Giasuddin Mondal has no connection with us. As far as information available with me, some outsiders are responsible for the extremely unfortunate and unprecedented incident,” he said.
