Uttar Pradesh: Amidst protests and violence against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government has implemented the Act in Uttar Pradesh.
According to TOI, the UP government is the first in the country to implement the Act. Along with the implementation, it has also rolled out directives to identify religious minority migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan residing in the state, and recognize them as citizens of the country.
According to government sources, the migrants are mainly found in Ghaziabad, Noida, Hapur, Lucknow, Shahjahanpur and Rampur.
However, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi has informed that the migrants were low in number and there were a substantial amount of migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the UP government has said that once the migrants are given citizenship, an update will be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
