Kannada actress caught gold smuggling at Bengaluru airport
In a significant operation against gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Bengaluru, apprehended Kannada actress Ranya Rao at Kempegowda International Airport. Officers confiscated 14.8 kg of gold from her possession.
Ranya landed in Bengaluru late Monday night on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Due to her frequent overseas travel, she was already on the DRI’s radar. Authorities revealed that she had discreetly worn a large portion of the gold while stashing gold bars within her attire.
She is the daughter of a high-ranking IPS officer, currently serving as a Director General of Police (DGP) in Karnataka. Investigators are probing whether any law enforcement personnel provided her support. Initial findings suggest that upon reaching the airport, she would identify herself as the DGP’s daughter and summon local police officers for an escort, raising suspicions about their potential involvement.
Ranya, widely recognized for her role alongside Kannada superstar Sudeep in Maanikya, has featured in multiple South Indian films. The DRI had intensified surveillance on her movements after discovering she had visited Dubai four times in just 15 days. Based on intelligence inputs, officials intercepted her upon arrival.
Following her detention, she was taken to the DRI’s Bengaluru office for questioning. A city court later remanded her to 14-day judicial custody. The agency has yet to release an official statement.
