Abu Dhabi: Ecolink Institute of Well-being, a Mangalore based training Institute headed by Dr Thomas Scaria, is involved in training addiction professionals and received the prestigious “International Award for Excellence in Training Provision” in Abu Dhabi on May 14 .

The Award is instituted by the International Society for Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP) based in the UK and constituted by international organizations like Colombo Plan, UNODC, World Health Organization and the US Department of State.

The award was handed over in the closing ceremony of the three days annual conference of the ISSUP which was attended by over 1000 delegates from around 100 countries.

Announcing the award and presenting the felicitation, Livia Eddegger, the Deputy Director of ISSUP said the Indian Institute was selected by the award committee for its excellence in training the maximum number of addiction professionals from around the globe and creating several credentialed professionals during the year.

“Ecolink Institute headed by Dr Thomas Scaria has trained and professionalised the highest number of addiction professionals in an excellent way”, said Livia Eddegger. Four other eminent persons from different parts of the world were also awarded for their services to Drug Demand Reduction services under various heads.

Dr Thomas Scaria has been working in the field of addiction management, training and consultancy for more than three decades in India and International Organizations.

Ecolink Institute has trained over 260 addiction professionals in Universal Treatment Curriculum on Substance Use Disorder in seven batches on online platforms. The students included psychologists, psychiatrists, doctors and social workers from all over India and some 20 other countries.

More than 30 of its students have already successfully completed the qualifying examination for credentials as “Internationally Certified Addiction Professionals”, who can practise as certified and licensed practitioners anywhere in the world.

Addiction professionals and representatives from major international organizations have held their 7th Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi from 12-16 May.

The event is a collaboration between the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP), the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC- UAE), the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR), and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

The conference titled “Uniting the Global Community to Face the Challenge of Addiction” was addressed by a distinguished list of keynote speakers including Dr Nora Volkow (Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse), Professor Michael Farrell (University of New South Wales), Former U.S. Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy, Dr Diana Fishbein (University of North Carolina), Giovanna Campello (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), Professor Dr Harry Sumnall (Liverpool John Moores University), Peer van der Kreeft (University College Ghent), Vladimir B. Poznyak MD (World Health Organization) and Zili Sloboda ScD (President of Applied Prevention Science International).
