Flower vendor Sathya shares her ordeal while availing ration card

Dubai: The Thirteenth episode of talk show Subalterns by Village TV Trust, Mangaluru and Loyola Degree College, Bengaluru was held on Friday February 4 at 6.30 pm IST.

Student, Divya M. from Second BCom was the special guest of the event. She is the daughter of Sathya from Hulimavu, who is a flower vendor.

The event host was Kiran Nirkan. The weekly programme is aired in Kannada.

The goal of ‘P2P – Local to Global’ is to provide a platform for unheard young voices in society and thereby create a supportive environment.

The episode began with Kiran Nirkan welcoming the guests and a sneek peek video into Divya’s mother Sathya’s day-to-day activities.

Sathya said, she came to Bengaluru when she was 12 and now its almost 30 years of her being in Bengaluru.

She said, in order to earn her living she also works as a maid at houses and offices. Divya being a student does a part time job to aid her family.

Reminiscing the initial days being a mortar worker, Sathya said, it indeed was difficult days to look after the kids and get into such work.

Stating her chaotic condition during lockdown days she said, it had become impossible to sell flowers back then. But she is glad that her house owner was understanding enough in letting her pay him house rent when things got back to normalcy.

Stating on how she had to run around in order to avail a ration card innocent Sathya said, as each election nears we plan to seek the ration card.

Dr. Kumaraswamy Bijjihalli, Head of Kannada Department at Loyola College said, The current Central Government Budget will result in keeping the poor stagnant as it focuses more on the corporate developement. And also stressed on how innocent people like Divya are deprived of basic facilities without giving ration card but an Aadhar card and Voter ID.

Fr. Francis Almeida, Principal of Loyola College Bengaluru answering host’s question on ‘How Loyola College strives in making the dream come true for their students’ said, “It is quite difficult from college’s part to afford the fee which UPSC or other CA coaching institutes demand. And so, we recommend our alumnis who have succeeded in the field to guide our students.

Divya aspiring to become a teacher said, I find that the current politics is unsuccessful in bringing reforms in our society and so, being a teacher I wish I can bring in a generation of politicains who bring the best in society.

The guests of the day, mother-daughter duo expressed gratitude towards News Karnataka’s initiative. Kiran Nirkan concluded the session.
