
Karnataka Couple Among Victims of Wayanad Landslides; Relief Efforts Intensify
A tragic landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, claimed the lives of Rathnamma, 45, and her husband Rajendra, 55, both from Nagavalli village in Chamarajanagar taluk, Karnataka. The couple was working on a tea estate when the massive landslides struck on Tuesday, following torrential rains that caused devastating torrents of mud and water.
The landslides, which have resulted in over 150 deaths, have severely impacted tea estates and nearby villages. The Chamarajanagar district administration confirmed the deaths and has identified seven other individuals from Karnataka in Wayanad, with two confirmed dead and five safe. Due to adverse weather conditions, traffic on the Bangalore-Wayanad National Highway 766 has been blocked. Travelers are advised to use the Gundlupet-Bandipur-Gudalur route. The Karnataka government has appealed for financial support, food supplies, clothing, and volunteers. Additional Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh emphasized the need for collective action to support affected citizens.
Mysuru district has mobilized resources for the treatment of victims at Heggadevankote taluk hospital and KR Hospital, with arrangements for transportation and cold storage of deceased bodies. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also authorized unrestricted passage through the Green Corridor at the Bandipur checkpost to expedite relief efforts.
