Karnataka’s Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has directed state health officials to pay special attention to travelers with Mpox symptoms at airports and seaports. This measure is part of a broader preparedness strategy for Mpox and Zika viruses, following a meeting on Monday to review the state’s response to these diseases.

Mpox Preparedness: India has reported 30 Mpox cases since 2022, with no new cases since March 2024. Despite this, the WHO has declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern. Health officials are to monitor and sensitize staff at entry points, though there have been no specific central directives yet.
Zika Virus Update: Zika virus cases have been recorded in Karnataka, including six in Jigani this August. A 3 km containment zone has been established in Jigani, and screening measures focus on pregnant women and babies due to potential risks like microcephaly.
Public Assurance: Rao emphasized that there is no need for panic or to declare a medical emergency in the state. Preventive measures are being taken for both Mpox and Zika viruses, with ongoing monitoring and control efforts.
