The Karnataka government has decided to discontinue board exams for students in classes 5, 8, 9, and 11 in state board-affiliated schools, aligning with a Supreme Court directive. School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced that the decision complies with the court’s April ruling, which found such exams in violation of the Right to Education Act.
From now on, students in classes 5, 8, and 9 will undergo Summative Assessment-2 (SA-2), while class 11 students will have an annual exam. This marks a reversal from the 2023-24 policy, which had introduced board exams for these grades, replacing SA-2.
The government had already held board exams in March 2023 but faced legal opposition from private school associations. Although the Karnataka High Court initially allowed the exams, the Supreme Court later stayed the decision, prompting the state to retract exam results and file an affidavit with the court.
The Supreme Court highlighted that board exams for students up to class 8 contravene key sections of the Right to Education Act.
