Belagavi: Depression seems to be the reason behind the suicide of police constable Yellappa Handibag, brother of DySP Kallappa Handibag who had committed suicide earlier. Yellappa was found hanging at his house at Kulgod in Gokak taluk on Thursday.
According to a preliminary investigation conducted by the police, depression drove Yellappa to take the extreme step. The investigation also revealed that hours before Yellappa committed suicide, he had cried profusely after watching a special programme on his brother on a Kannada news channel. Police said this might have led him to end his life.
Police also stated that Yellappa was “mentally disturbed” after Kallappa’s suicide and would weep every time his brother was mentioned. DySP Kallappa had ended his life by hanging at his in-laws’ house in Raibag taluk on July 5.
Yellappa in his death note had Yellappa apologised to his parents and siblings for committing suicide and appealed to his younger brother Nagappa and sister Dundawwa to look after their parents after his death.
The 28-year-old constable had joined police force in 2008. Yellappa, who was unmarried, was staying in a rented house at Kulgod.
