Bagalakote: Former Minister Umashree alleged that the State Government’s “deafening silence” on the issue of sugarcane price fixation has created a situation where farmers are taking to the streets to protest for sugarcane price fixation today.

Speaking to mediapersons at GLBC Guest House in the Town on Monday November 14, she said it was the Government’s first duty to come to the aid of farmers. The previous Congress Government at the Centre, and Siddaramaiah in the State Congress Government had helped the farmers by waiving off Rs. 50,000 loans and distributing a subsidy of Rs. 350 per tonne to the farmers.

She alleged, “The BJP Government in the State is a stone-hearted Government in the matter of farmers. With the factories in the District in the fray for sugarcane prices, the lives of the farmers will become more unbearable with each passing day. If sugarcane is not harvested on time, the farmers are bound to suffer further losses due to water scarcity, low yields, increase in transportation and harvesting costs. She said there is an urgent need for the State Government to take an immediate decision on sugarcane price fixation of farmers as there is a huge loss to the farmer in all situations including increase in prices of petrol, diesel, fertiliser, excessive rains, and drought etc.
