Bagalakote: The District is known for sugarcane cultivation. As there was a good monsoon this year, it resulted in the better yield of sugarcane. The sugar factories too recorded the highest amount of sugar crushing this year.

In the past decade, the factories recorded sugarcane crushing of over 1 crore metric tonnes only two times. But this year, all the previous records have been wiped out. Till April over 1.70 crore metric tonnes of sugarcane was crushed in as many as 12 factories of the District.

Though some issue arises between factories and farmers regarding minimum price of sugarcane, finally both agreed for the price of Rs. 2700 per tonne. Factories began work after negotiation. The management committee of factories expected around 80 lakh metric tonnes to 1 crore metric tonnes of crushing. But the yield went beyond the expectations. The interesting aspect is that this year the yield has seen a rise but the cultivated area remains the same as last year. The farmers will get Rs. 4590 Crore sugar bill.

Every year factories work only 90 to 100 days for crushing where as this time crushing began in November and ended in April, which means around 150 days of work.

Sugarcane is being cultivated in 1.20 lakh hectares of land in the District. Good yield is the reason for increase in the amount of crushing, says Agricultural Department personnel and farmers.

Among 12 sugar factories Utturu ICPL sugar factory stands first in crushing. It crushed over 27. 50 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane, while Mudhol Nirani Sugars owned by Large Scale Industrial Minister Muragesh Nirani which crushed around 25.28 lakh metric tonne of sugarcane stands second.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka Nirani Group Managing Director Sangamesh Nirani said that, 12 factories of Bagalakote District have crushed over 1.70 metric tonnes of sugarcane this year. The District has seen proper monsoon this year, and due to Covid – 19 people too returned from cities and were working on farms which resulted in the high yield of sugarcane. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the income of farmers must double, which came true in our District.

Agriculture Department Joint Director Dr. Chetana Patil said, “Eventhough yields were destroyed due to flood, still as the District received good monsoon therefore there was a recovery in the yield. Along with this, the sugarcane loses weight during summer due to lack of water. This time water shortage too was not there so minimum 50 metric tonne yield came from an acre of land.”
