Bagalakote: The schools are all set to reopen shortly. The Education Department is making all preparations for the same. However, many schemes launched by the Education Department with the intention of benefiting the poor and rural children, and to increase the interest of the children have been stopped.

Earlier, the BJP Government in the State had implemented a scheme to distribute bicycles to the benefit of children. The bicycle project became popular, especially during B. S. Yediyurappa’s term. After the Covid set in, the bicycle schemes have been cut short. The distribution of shoes and socks have also been stopped.

Every year approximately 30,000 students study in 8th standard in the District. Schools came to a completely halt in 2019 due to the Covid pandemic. Three years of floods, including 2020 and 2021, have been ravaged by Covid on a massive scale. The Government’s economy was hit. However, the exact reason is unknown.

The cycles have not been distributed for the last three years. This has created a serious problem for the poor, children of labourers, and students from rural areas. Parents are unhappy that the Government has not distributed bicycles even though Covid has subsided. Students from villages lacking bus facility and from farmhouse have to walk miles to go to school. It remains to be seen whether the Government will grant bicycle in the current academic year. In addition, plans to distribute shoes and socks have also been cut. Two pairs of school uniforms were distributed to the children of classes 1 to 8.

The Education Department has come up with a new plan for the development of school children in the District. Children from different villages are selected for Adarsha Vidyalaya. However, they are suffering from lack of accommodation. A proposal has been submitted to the Government to select a model school for the Gram Panchayat and appoint full-time teachers for Adarsha Vidyalaya along with providing rooms and transport facilities to the children. There has been no response from the Government.

Speaking to mediapersons Bagalakote Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Shrishail Biradar said, ”Bicycles have not been distributed to class 8th students for two to three years now. Children and parents are asking for the same. It has been brought to the notice of the Government. We are confident of distributing bicycles this year. Also, accommodation facility for Adarsh Vidyalaya students.”
