Belagavi: A five-year-old boy died on the spot after a Maanja thread entangled his neck while he was on his way home on a two-wheeler to buy clothes for Diwali festival on National Highway 4 in Gandhinagara here on the afternoon of Sunday October 23.
The deceased has been identified as Vardhana Eranna Beli (5), a resident of Anantapura Village near Yamakanamaradi. The boy died on the spot after a Maanja thread entangled his neck on National Highway 4 opposite the fruit market in Gandhinagara. No matter how hard the father tried to save the child, he failed.
Vardhana had come to Belagavi with his father Eranna on a two-wheeler to buy clothes. He had bought clothes in the City and was on his way to his hometown from Belagavi. Vardhan was sitting in the front of the two-wheeler. Vardhana died on the spot.
Though the Maanja thread has been banned while flying kite, it was sold in the black market and has now claimed the life of the boy. The boy’s relatives have demanded that the District Administration and the police should take necessary steps to ban Maanja completely.
