Dharwad: The joy of people of three remote villages in Kalaghatagi taluk namely Kokkarewad, Dhuparthiwad and Mullankere knew no bounds on Monday as ‘Namma Mitra’ foundation illuminated their lives with solar power.

The ‘Namma Mitra’ foundation, an NGO, catered to the needs of hundreds of families in these villages by providing them with solar units and clean drinking water units. Hitherto, due to the negligence of local administration, these families led their life in darkness and without any basic facilities.

The programme titled ‘Darkness towards light’ was inaugurated by former MP and Nargis Dutt Foundation trustee Priya Dutt at Kokkarewad. Dutt said such charity works will be extended to other parts in Karnataka.

The two organisations together adopted several villages at Palgar district in Maharashtra and sustainable development has been achieved. As part of the programme, a total of 120 solar lights have been distributed besides installing 10 drinking water units at government schools and anganwadi centers in these villages.

Foundation Director Seema Saadikha said the main focus of foundation activities lies in the area of Health care, Education, Self-sustenance and environment.

Prior to the programme, the villages mainly from Gouli community greeted the guests by performing traditional dance wearing colourful traditional attires.
