Dharwad: The Dharwad police on Saturday arrested BJP State President Prahlad Joshi and former CM Jagadish Shettar along with few BJP workers as they tried to picket Dharwad deputy commissioner’s office with hundreds of their party workers, demanding release of BJP candidate for Hebballi ZP seat Yogish Gouda, who was arrested for allegedly trying to assault police officials on poll duty.

Joshi who was agitating at the DC’s office alleged that district in-charge minister Vinay Kulkarni had ordered BJP candidate’s arrest. Joshi and Shettar had also sat on a dharna, demanding that BJP candidate be allowed to vote in the election to the ZP. But the district adminstration refused to oblige as the BJP candidate is in judicial custody for a non-bailable offence.

Hence, enraged protesters clashed with the police, trying to break the security cordon at the gate of the Dharwad DC’s office, shouting slogans and setting tyres on fire. The window panes of a police van were damaged in the violence. They also alleged that the government machinery was working in favour of the Congress and had failed to hold the election in a fair manner. However, the arrested were taken to the town police station and released later.

BJP zilla panchayat election contestant, from Hebballi ZP constituency Yogishgouda Goudar was arrested on charges of misbehaving with the policemen and for violation of the code on the direction of Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan to sub-inspector (SI) S?S?Kamatagi. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
