Dharawad: We have read about a man who sexually assaulted a cow in Bengaluru just recently. Most of them would have pitied the cow, and exclaimed what a cruel man! Another face of human cruelty was revealed at Educational Capital Dharawad City.
An incident where a cow with injured and bleeding ear was witnessed in Malamaddi of the City. It was a man-made wound, not a natural one. Cutting a small part of ear with a razor is a common practise among animals to create an identification mark. This type of practice is also seen in pigs, sheep and dogs. However, the identity of the offender is still unknown. Miscreants sometimes perform such things to get a thrill or pleasure.
Pigs’ ears have been cut into various shapes, and this acts as an identification mark. Many people cut the tails of dogs for no apparent reason. This is especially true of Dobermans and recently they have started the same practise on Mudhol hounds too.
Speaking to NewsKarnataka Harshavardan Sheelvant said that, there are several scientific methods for marking, such as using durable ink for cow horns, plastic steeples, and so on. People, on the other hand, choose this heinous method of identification. The cow I saw was bleeding in both the ears. It was irritated by the pain and did not allow me to help it. This injured ear is often bitten by birds such as the crow, mina, and maggots. The maggots can even cause death in cows by causing damage to their brains.
Further, he said, we had asked the Humane Society International (HSI) of India send a Mobile Treatment Vehicle to the City, however, the van is no longer operational. They are unconcerned about these innocent animals. As Animal Rights Activists, we demand the formation of a committee under the Deputy Commissioner to prevent such horrific acts, he added.
Veterinary Doctor Dr. R. S. Padara said, “docking of animals is an offence. We will give tags for identity purposes. Under SPC – 2021, we are spreading awareness against the exploitation of animals. However, the incident indicates man’s brutality and according to the law, we are not permitted to cut the ear or any other part of an animal. There are a number of ways to make animal identification marks, and people must consider them all.”
