Hubballi-Dharwad set to host State Olympics from Feb 3

Dharwad: Hubballi and Dharwad cities are set to host the State Olympics from Feb 3-10. The event being organized in North Karnataka after a gap of 30 years.

Presiding over a preparatory meeting in this regard recently CM Sidddaramaiah said the State Olympics was being held in the State after a gap of eight years. The last meet was held in Mandya in 2007-2008. This will be the first Olympic meet in north Karnataka after the one held at Bagalkot in 1987, he said.

The meet was being organised jointly by the Sports Department, and Karnataka Olympic Association, and a high power committee headed by the Chief Minister had been formed to oversee the arrangement.

He said, the government would spend Rs. 3 crore for the event where 5,000 sportspersons will vie for honour in 275 events. As many as 275 gold, 275 silver, and 275 bronze medals will be given to the winners. Over 1,000 officials will be on duty conducting the event. The sports events will be held both at Dharwad and Hubballi, archery and shooting will be held in Bengaluru, he said.

The Chief Minister said, conducting the mega sports event would help develop sports infrastructure in twin cities and it will provide a platform to the rural youths to exhibit their talent and nurture it further.

Reacting to a query he said the new sports policy would be announced during the next budget.

Ministers Pramod Madhwaraj, Basavaraj Rayaraddy, K J George, Vinay Kulkarni, MLC Basavaraj Horatti, and others were present.
