Mahadayi issue: Religious heads ask Govt to win over other CM’s in Mumbai meet

Dharwad: The Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha which has been in the forefront of struggle for safeguarding the interests of Kannada land, language and culture, on Tuesday witnessed yet another meeting related to Mahadayi issue, this time by the religious heads, organized as a prelude to the CM’s meet scheduled in Mumbai on Oct 21.

The non-political outfit involving swamijis, farmers and workers discussed the issue at length and decided to bring to the notice of three state governments Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra the need for timely release of water and solving the vexed issue earlier.

The meeting of heads of all religions decided to urge the three riparian states to release Mahadayi water for drinking purpose of living beings on humanitarian grounds.The state government was told to listen to the suggestions of experts concerning water, environment, irrigation and legal matters before the Mumbai meet and put up defensive thoughts and convince Maharashtra and Goa CM’s on the necessity of releasing water. The meeting also urged to take a unanimous decision in all party meeting in this regard.

The Maharashtra government should invite Waterman of India Dr. Rajendra Singh to the meeting they said while issuing warning against any kind of negligence by representatives of different parties of Karnataka taking part in the meeting. Jayamrityunjaya swamiji of Koodalsangam, Purushottamanand Puri swamiji of Hosadurg, Mallikarjun swamiji of Dharwad, Jayadev Jagadguru of Vijayapur, Basavaling swamiji of Navalgund, Fr. Fidlino, Fr. Anthony, Moulana Yasin Jismi of Hubballi besides a host of representatives of different organizations took part in the meeting.

Addressing the gathering Jayamrityunjaya swamiji said lack of political stability and political will has prolonged the Mahadayi water issue for four decades.

If there was political will the issue would have been solved within four days. Now the Center has felt the heat of the struggle for Cauvery and Mahadayi water. The impact of farmers struggle has resulted in meeting of CMs of three states he said while suggesting some changes in National Water Policy.
