Gadag: When the onion lovers are complaining about a steep increase in the onion prices, in Gadag APMC, one of the biggest onion markets in the state, farmers launched a violent protest demanding fair price for their produce following a sharp fall in the purchase price.
It all started on Tuesday evening. Till noon, a quintal (100 kg) bag of onion was sold for Rs.2,000 to Rs.3,000. The growers were expecting a better deal by evening. However, to their dismay, by evening the prices dropped to Rs.200.
Upset by this sudden drop, the farmers launched an agitation. A few middlemen were hit by the farmers and chairs were broken in the APMC premises.
The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Senior officials of the agriculture department rushed to the spot and assured fair price on Wednesday for the onion.
