Kalburgi’s killer found? Mystery over unidentified body

Belagavi: It is learnt that the deceased body of a person which was found in a forest a few days ago by the Belgavi police resembles one of the sketches released by the police of the suspect in Kalburgi murder case.

It has been reported that the person was shot dead at Manikavady. A case has been registered at the Khanapur police station and the case is under further investigation.

The Belagavi police had released sketches of two suspects on September 3 in connection with rationalist MM Kalburgi murder case.

Renowned Kannada writer, research scholar and academician Dr MM Kalburgi was allegedly shot dead by right-wing Hindu activists recently, who was targeted over his alleged remarks on Hindu culture and practices.

Two unidentified youths knocked on the door of the writer’s residence in Dharwad city in northwestern Karnataka at around 8.40 am.

No accused has been arrested so far in this high profile case. Reportedly, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been clueless about the killing of Dr MM Kalburgi, who was gunned down by unidentified assailants at his house in Kalyan Nagar.

A team of CID sleuths headed by SP DC Rajappa camped in Dharwad for a week, while some more teams were dispatched to Kolhapur, Vijayapura, Belagavi, and other parts of North Karnataka in this regard.

The CID team had questioned the family, relatives, friends and neighbours of Kalburgi and also looked into property disputes besides issues he faced when he was the president of Basavaraj Kattimani Pratishtana. However, the CID is said to have failed to make any headway in the case.

Days after the murder, one person, reportedly the former convenor of Sri Ram Sene, was arrested in connection with the murder of Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi for allegedly making derogatory comments on social media. A case was filed at Bunder Police station in Mangaluru, however, he was detained from Dharwad.
