Belagavi: A delegation of growers from coffee growing districts of Kodagu, Hassan and Chikkamagalur under the banner of Karnataka Growers Federation (KGF) met the chief minister on the backlines of assembly session at Belagavi on November 17.

A delegation led by KGF President B S Jairam consisting of legislators and legislative council members from the three affected districts along with Minister A Manju and Kimmane Rathnakar from Shivamogga appraised the Chief Minister Siddaramiah about the problems plaguing the coffee sector in special and sought government’s help in resolving them.

On the land encroachment issue, Jairam urged the chief minister to adopt the Kerala model, where the encroached land remains with the grower for a lease period of 35 years.

They also sought inter waiver on loans up to 30 June 2018 in cases where growers have taken loans from cooperatives and repay principal amount of the loan.
They urged chief minister to withdraw the service tax being levied by the Agricultural Produce Marketing Federation (APMC) on pepper produce, in order to reduce the financial burden on growers already affected by lower prices.

Many others members from KGF and associate organisations were present at the meeting.
