Akkamahadevi Women’s Varsity to hold 12th Convocation Ceremony on Nov 9

Vijayapura: The Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University will hold its 12th convocation at its premises on Tuesday November 9, which would be attended by Governor and Chancellor of the University Thawar Chand Gehlot.

Informing this at a press conference on Monday November 8, Vice Chancellor,  Dr. B. K. Tulasimala said that it is for the second time in the history of the University that the Governor is coming for the Convocation. It was in 2016, when the then Governor Vaju Bhai Vala had attended the annual event. She said that Infosys Foundation Head Sudha Murthy will also be joining the event through video conference where she will deliver her address.

Dr. Tulasimala said that a total of 76 students will be getting gold medals while 48 students will get PhD awards during the convocation. A total of 11208 students have cleared graduation, postgraduation and PG diplomas this year, she added.

She informed that a total of three persons will get honorary doctorate for their exemplary contribution in different fields. The awardees include Janaki Srinivasmurthy for literature, Suma Sudhindra for music and Kalpana Saroj for entrepreneurship and women empowerment.

Dr. Tulasimala said that because of the Covid pandemic, a limited audience is allowed to attend the event. Only invited dignitaries, gold medalists and PhD award winners will be present at the programme.

Other students and the general public can watch the event live on the YouTube channel of the University and on the facebook page of the university. The event will start at 9:00 am and will end at 1:30 pm.

Replying to a question, she said that since the digitisation of the study has become vital and needed, the University has prepared a project plan of Rs. 6.7 crore for the purpose. She said that the proposal has been submitted to the government for approval. We want to have more smart classes, high-speed internet connections and other such modern technologies for digitisation of the University,” she said.

Admitting that the University is facing shortage of fulltime staff, she said that while according to the University Grant Commission each department should have at least seven lecturers, the
University has only 5 fulltime staff in 18 departments and total lack of fulltime staff in other 12 departments.

Registrar R. Sunandamma, Registrar (Evaluation) K. Ramesh, Finance Officer S. B. Kamashetty, Convocation coordinator D.M. Madari and Media Committee Head Omkar Kakade were present.
