Vijayapura: All the efforts of the BJP and Congress to win unopposed in the coming MLC polls for the dual seat of Vijayapura-Bagalkot District fell flat as the leaders of both national parties failed to convince all the independent candidates to withdraw from the election

The Congress which has given ticket to sitting MLC Sunilgouda Patil of Vijayapura and the BJP which has fielded former MLA P. H. Pujar of Bagalkot, reportedly made efforts till the last moment to convince five independent candidates to withdraw. This would have ensured the unopposed election and the victory of both candidates without even fighting the polls.

A total of 13 candidates had filed their nomination papers. However the nomination of one person was rejected due to technical reasons. Of the remaining 12, two are from Congress and the BJP respectively and remaining ten were independent candidates. However after the withdrawal of the nomination of five candidates, a total of seven candidates remain in the fray.

Among those who withdrew their nominations include Gurulingappa Angadi and Kashim Patel. While Angadi is a BJP member, Patel is identified as the Congress member. Both candidates reportedly withdrew their nomination papers after the party leaders of the respective parties requested them to do so. However, one candidate who is believed to be the strongest among the contesting independent candidates is Mallikarjun Loni.

The sources said that if any party convinces Loni to withdraw his nomination, then convincing other independent candidates to withdraw would have been easier. But Loni did not budge and declared openly that in no case he will be withdrawing his nomination. Sources also said that Former Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai themselves called on behalf of their parties to convince Loni to withdraw. But none of the efforts changed Loni’s mind.

In a press conference, Loni declared that even if he was threatened, he would not be withdrawing the nomination. Later, it was learnt that Loni did not come into contact of anybody and left to srishailam Temple.

The candidates who are now in fray are Sunilgouda Patil of the Congress, P. H. Pujar of BJP, Kantappa Inchageri, Durgappa Siddapur, Mallikarjun Kenginal, Mallikarjun Loni and Srimant Barikai.

The polls will be held on December 10 while the counting will be held on December 14.
