Vijayapura: Vijayapura has become 100% vaccinated City as far as Covid vaccination is concerned. The other urban areas and taluks of the district is yet to achieve the feat.

According to the officials, the City has a population of 323796 of which the target people for vaccination ( 18 years and above) are 216073. The Taluk Health  Department claims to have vaccinated 217592 persons in the City. “Percentage wise, we have achieved a 107% of the target which is more than the given target,” says Kavita Dodmani, Taluk Health Officer.

When asked how was it possible to vaccinate more people than the targeted ones, she said that while the target is set based on the population of the City, however many people from outside the City have also taken vaccines at various camps and health centres in Vijayapura. “Since vaccination is open for all and not restricted to people of a particular place, our achievement has gone beyond the given target,” she added.

When reminded her that many people of the City have not taken vaccines till date, Dr. Dodmani admitted it stating that the Health Department is identifying such areas and people who have not taken the vaccine yet. “We are making efforts to convince people to get the vaccine administered for their safety, but we also know that many of them are reluctant and are refusing to take vaccines despite several appeals,” she said.

Dr. Dodmani said that with the help of the Azim Premji Foundation which is supplying human resources, the department is getting door-to-door surveys conducted to identify people who have not taken vaccines even to date. “We are trying our best to convince the families to take vaccines,  but we cannot force anyone to take the vaccine as it is their choice,” she asserted.

Meanwhile she said that with 217592 people taking the first dose and 147898 second dose till Saturday November 13, the pressure on the health staff has come down substantially.

“There was a time when we have vaccinated over 8,000 people in a single day in the City, but today with the majority of people having taken at least the first dose, we have left largely with people who need the second dose. Therefore, everyday we are receiving only around 800 -1000 people in all centres of the City for taking a second dose,” she added.
