Vijayapura: The District Congress Committee (DCC) staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday, in protest against the government’s decision to increase the electricity charges.
Demanding that the government roll back its decision, DCC president and former MLA Raju Algur pointed out that the people’s businesses and lives have been devastated by the COVID pandemic and lockdown.
Addressing the gathering, he said that every sector is reeling under some or the other crisis and many are staring at a severe financial crunch and that in such situations, it is the duty of the government to come to the people’s aid.
However, the BJP government has been rubbing salt in the wounds of the people by increasing the electricity charges by 40 paisa/unit, he said.
“The government is being irresponsible. What was the need to hike the electricity charges now? The government could have waited for some more time till the financial situation of the people improves. This is nothing but a betrayal of the people,” he added.
Congress leaders Shabbir Jagirdar, Abdul Hamid Mushrif, M M Sutar, Jyotiram Pawar, Mahoammed Rafiq Tapal, Chandsab Gadaglaw, Vishnanath Math, Hashimpeer Walikar, Zamir Bakshi, Arati Shahapur, Abdul Khadar, Zamir Bagalkot, Usman Patel, Sahebgouda Biradar, Azad Patel, Vasanth Honmode, Irfan Shaikh, Sharanappa Yekkundi, Irappa Jakkannavar, Manjula Jadhav and other members were present.
