Vijayapura: Following the reports of some women complaining of infection after undergoing cesarean section in the District Government Hospital a few days ago, Upalokayukta B. S. Patil visited the hospital on Saturday May 21 to hear from the patients and the hospital staff.

During the visit, he inquired with the hospital staff what was the reason for the infection and what steps were taken. Replying to the question, the medical staff said that such infection among some of the women after cesarean section is common and claimed that required treatment was also given.

The hospital has been receiving awards annually for good practice, however owing to the increase of the patients everyday, the hospital staff is finding it hard to take care of the patients due to lack of facilities and infrastructure.

The staff said that they need more nurses and doctors to take care of the increasing number of patients. About the patients suffering from infection, they said that while the majority of them have recovered, only a few are still undergoing treatment.

Patil also discussed with the Deputy Commissioner Vijayamahantesh Danammanavar about the incident. He informed Patil that he visited the hospital soon after the incident got reported in the media. A committee was also formed and details have been collected. He said that the possibility of infection was because of shortage of operation theatres.

Patil asked how many women have undergone C-section in the last six months in the hospital and how many of them got similar infections in the past. He directed the hospital staff to give details.

On the occasion, he warned the hospital staff of strict action if such incidents get reported again. “Due to the infection, the women face problems as they cannot feed their newborn babies. Even the child gets deprived of milk which is essential for growth after birth. The hospital staff must be very careful about it and make sure that such incidents do not occur again,” he said.

He also visited the centre where the treatment is being given. During the visit, he asked the hospital staff to write to the Government seeking one more operation theatre as the hospital has only one operation theatre to perform C-sections.

Patil also visited various wards of the hospital to check the conditions.

He however expressed happiness over the hospital maintaining cleanliness.
