Vijayapura: Concerned over the increasing flood situation during every monsoon in the State, Congress MLA of Indi Taluk Yeshawantraigouda Patil has suggested the State Government to establish a separate department for managing floods and water.

Speaking to mediapersons on Saturday May 28, Congress MLA Patil pointed out that, “If the government establishes a separate department for flood and water management it will ease the works of th Government during floods and water crisis. A department can concentrate only on the flood and it’s relief works.”

“At present it is either being monitored by the Revenue Department or District Administrations. A separate department is the need of the hour for the State. The State Government should act on it quickly,” urged Indi MLA.

Stating on the flood and water management between Karnataka and Maharashtra states, Patil said that, “The Government should work on achieving coordination with Maharashtra before the start of the monsoon. If the water that is being released from the neighbouring state water reservoirs is regulated properly then there is a high chance of preventing floods this season in Kalaburagi, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Bagalkot Districts.”

Indi MLA also appealed to the Government to take necessary measures to tackle the possible floods this year. “The State Government instead of acting after the floods, it should start preparing for possible flooding in this region. It should address all the loopholes in order to tackle flooding this monsoon,” urged Patil.

Commenting on the 15 Tmc water allocation from Bheema River to Indi region, Patil said that, “The allocated water is being utilised for drinking water purpose. The State Government should put pressure on Maharashtra to revise the water allocation (increase) to our region.”

“Bheema river doesn’t have a catchment resource like Krishna. If water allocation is increased it will bring a big relief to the people of this region. It will not help Indi but also parts of Kalaburagi. I believe the Government will respond positively,” retorted Congress MLA.

Responding to BJP MLA B. R. Patil Yatnal, who had said that two MLAs from Congress will soon join BJP, Patil said that, “I won’t respond to the statements of Yatnal. He is known for making irresponsible statements. He has lost connection between brain and tongue. I will continue to remain in Congress because it has given me everything in my political career including power.”

“Yatnal should watch his words before making such baseless statements. He is in a responsible position. Even people know his political history. If he fails to change his attitude the people of his constituency will teach him a lesson,” said Indi MLA.
