Vijayapura: The counting of votes for the dual seat of MLC constituency witnessed a tough fight between BJP candidate P. H. Pujar and independent candidate Mallikarjun Loni on Tuesday December 14. While the Congress candidate Sunilgouda Patil won by securing 3245 votes in the first preferential votes itself, the fight was witnessed between Pujar and Loni as neither of the candidates could secure required first preferential votes. In order to elect the second winner, the counting continued for the second round where second preferential votes were counted. Finally after the second round of counting was over, Pujar won in the second preferential votes by defeating Loni in the tough fight.

The victory of Pujar was earlier expected to be easy as he was representing the ruling party and many top leaders had campaigned for him. But Loni played a significant role in ensuring that Pujar’s victory did not go easy. On the one hand, the counting continued to elect a second candidate, the celebration was taking place outside Darbar High School which was the counting centre. The supporters of Sunilgouda Patil were rejoicing

Speaking to mediapersons after the victory, Sunilgouda Patil said that this victory is of all the Congress workers, present and former MLAs and leaders of both the Districts who have extensively worked for his victory in the polls.

“I thank everyone who has campaigned for me in the polls. I express my gratitude to the voters also who have voted me to victory,” he added.

Stating that he had clear confidence of winning in the polls, he said that since he was in touch personally with all the Gram Panchayat members and was ears to their grievances, he was confident of the victory.

“I have held several rounds of meetings with the GP members and have raised their issues in the council. I have tried to get their honorarium increased. Now that I have won again, I will raise my voice in getting free bus passes for the members and other such benefits,” he said.

Later, a large gathering was witnessed outside the counting centre where hundreds of supporters of Sunilgouda had joined to celebrate the victory. They were bursting crackers and smearing Gulal on each other to celebrate the victory.

Several Congress leaders including Abdul Hamid Mushrif, Mohammed Rafique Tapal, Gangadhar Sambanni and others were present.
