Vijayapura: With the MLC election for Local Bodies’ Constituency is less than a month away, and the Congress appears to be in a fix in selecting the candidate for Vijayapura-Bagalkot Constituency.

The party is having a tough time as both sitting MLCs of the constituency are from the Congress and the party is seriously contemplating fielding only one candidate. Two sitting MLC S. R. Patil of Bagalkot and Sunilgouda Patil of Vijayapura are strong contenders. Besides them, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson S. M. Patil Ganihar of Vijayapura is also making efforts to clinch the ticket.

The situation has become tricky for the Congress in selecting the candidate, because many leaders of the party are of the view that the party should field only one candidate to ensure victory. The winner is based on the preferential votes, and the party fears that it will lose both the seats if both of the candidates fail to secure adequate preferential votes.
It may be noted that S. R. Patil, who is the present leader of the opposition in council had declared in the last election itself that it was his last election and after which he will not contest for MLC post.

Despite that it is learnt that Patil is expressing desire to contest in the polls. On the other hand, Sunilgouda Patil, younger brother of MLA and Former Minister M. B. Patil too wishes to contest again. Interestingly, he had won at the by-election which was held after MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal who was the then MLC, resigned to contest in assembly polls. Following which, Sunilgouda contested the election and won.

Meanwhile the party sources said that since both Patils are strong candidates it does want to upset anybody but at the same time it wants to find an amicable solution.

Leaders such as Shivanand Patil and M. B. Patil said media persons that the party high command will take a final decision, shortly.
