Vijayapura: The second wave of Covid pandemic has affected the teaching fraternity intensely as 89 teachers of Vijayapura and Bagalkot district together have lost their lives to deadly virus.

Of the 89 teachers, 67 from Vijayapura and 22 from Bagalkot district lost their lives in the last two months according to the officials of the Public Instruction Department.

The officials said that over 150 teachers in Vijayapura have been tested Covid positive in the last one month. Of them 60 teachers have recovered and 15 were under treatment in the hospitals while 67 have lost their lives. Besides teachers, even the staff of the education department has died as five of them succumbed to the virus.

What is more shocking is that out of the 67 teachers who died, most of them were men and above 40 years of age. Interestingly, none of them were deputed for any other government duty.

Narayan V Hosur, Deputy Director of DPI Vijayapura is appalled to hear of the death of so many teachers. In two months only, we have lost so many teachers that on an average, two teachers have died everyday from last week of April.

He said that the department is keeping a track of teachers who have tested positive.

“We are hoping that no teacher loses life to the virus”, he said

He said that the government offers financial relief to the dependents of the deceased teachers.

“We have already submitted the detailed reports of the deceased teachers to the government.  We have been urging the teachers to stay at home and report to duty only when they are asked to but with all precautions”, he said.

In Bagalkot district, some 50 teachers tested Covid positive in the last one month, of them 22 died. Most of them were aged between 36 and 55.

In the first wave, some 30 teachers had become victims of the virus in the twin districts.
