Vijayapura: In the elections held for the six Town Panchayat of the District, the Congress has gained upper hand by securing clear majority in three Taluk Panchayats (TPs) while the ruling BJP has suffered jolt by winning a lone TP. The performance of JD (S) was worse as the party could not win a single TP.

Three TPs won by the Congress are Kolhar, Nidagundi and Nalatwad, the BJP won Managuli TP. Devarahipparagi and Almel TPs have recorded hung TP as no party gained majority.
Interestingly, in the last TP  polls, the JD (S) had won two TPs;  Managuli and Devarahipparagi. Similarly, the BJP too had won in two TPs; Kolhar and Almel. The Congress also had won two TPs; Nalatwad and Nidagundi.

What is more interesting is that this time two candidates of AIMIM have won from Kolhar TP. The JD (S) failed to open an account in the same TP.
If more details of the results are checked, then in Managuli, BJP has won 12 and Congress 4 seats in the 16 member TP.

Last time, Appugouda, was in JD (S) who had contested in MLA polls from Basavanabagewadi Taluk but lost by a small margin against MLA Shivanand Patil.

This time, he has joined the BJP and ensured the victory of the party candidates. It is also seen as a setback to Shivanand Patil as Managuli TP falls in his Constituency.
The results of Almel TP remained hung as no party gained a majority. Of the 19 seats, BJP won in 9 places, Congress 7 and three seats have been won by independent candidates. Here, it is learnt that BJP will gain majority with the support of independent candidates.

Devarahipparagi TP is also hung with no party gaining majority. Of the 17 wards, Congress has won in seven places, BJP and JD (S) have won four each seats while two seats have been grabbed by independent candidates.

Nalatwad which has 14 seats, in which Congress has won nine seats, JD (S) 1 and 4 seats have been won by the independent candidates. Surprisingly, the BJP has not won a single seat in the TP.

The results are seen as a setback to BJP MLA A. S. Patil Nadahalli of Muddebihal Taluk where Nalatwad falls in his constituency.

In Kolhar, of the 16 seats, Congress has won 11 seats which gives majority to the party, BJP could secure only 3 seats, AIMIM won two seats and one seat has been won by an independent candidate.

In Nidagundi which has 16 seats, Congress has won majority by winning 9 seats, BJP won in six places and one seat is grabbed by an independent candidate.

Expressing elation over the results, District Congress President Raju Algur said that it is the indication that the people are unhappy with the BJP rule.

“People are watching the performance of the BJP in the State. They have already given clear indication that they are going to vote against the BJP and support the Congress in the coming assembly polls of 2023,” he said.

Reacting about the results, BJP district President R. S. Patil Kuchabal admitted that the party has witnessed a setback in the polls. He however said that the party will introspect.

When informed that the Congress is already projecting the results as the indicator to the coming assembly polls, Kuchabal refuted the claims. He said that only the result of TP cannot be considered a referendum on the assembly polls. “ We still have many elections such as ZP and MLC to go. We are confident of winning other polls”, he said.

In his reply, JD (S) District President, Mallikarjun Yendigeri said that the party failed to meet the expectations because of the lack of leadership in the District.

He said that the quitting of the party by Ashok Managuli and Appugouda from JDb(S) has made an adverse impact on the party. “We will however try to rectify our mistakes and try to strengthen the party in coming days,” he said.
