Vijayanagar: After the government deciding to reopen degree colleges in the State soon after vaccinating the students and college staff, the district has undertaken a vaccination drive to administer vaccines.

According to the data given by the district administration, the district has a total of 99-degree colleges, of them highest-39 colleges are in Bijapur city, followed by 11 in Muddebihal and 10 in Talikot taluk. Remaining in other taluks of the district.

These 39 colleges together have 54106 students, teaching, non-teaching staff who should get vaccinated before the commencement of the colleges.

Of these many students and staff, so far only 18399 persons have taken jab while 35707 are yet to get the vaccine administered.

Interestingly, while in Kolhar, all 412 students and staff have taken the vaccine, in Bijapur city, only 7943 persons have taken the jab while a whopping 22160 persons have yet to take the vaccine.

While vaccination drive has been launched in all colleges, the district administration has been appealing the staff and students to get them vaccinated before the start of the college.

On Friday, Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University held vaccination drive to where vaccine was administered to its teaching and non teaching staff.

It is learned that many staff and students are still hesitant to take vaccine which is making the job of the health department hard in convincing them to take vaccines.

Admitting that the administration is facing difficulty in vaccinating students at the colleges in taluks are the students have to come from rural areas, Taluk Health Officer, Kavita Dodmani said that they are trying to get as many students as possible to get vaccinated.

“ In case of staff, most of them who are above 45 years have already taken vaccine, but several staff members and mainly students have to take the jab”, she said.

She said that while two noble officers have been appointed only to check the vaccination progress for degree college students and staff, she said that the administration has also directed the principle of the colleges to prepare the list of staff and students who have taken vaccines.

“ Since the colleges can easily prepare the list as they get students and staff, they can submit the details which will help us prepare a final report on the number of people given vaccine”, she said.

Dodmani, however, doubts that all students and staff will get vaccines before July 15 when the colleges are expected to resume.

“ In order to give vaccine to students and staff, we have stopped vaccination process for general public, but still in the absence of adequate doses of vaccine, we are facing difficulty in vaccinating all the target beneficiaries”, she said.
