Vijayapura: A girl from Vijayapura district, who was forced to become a Devadasi was rescued by the Child Welfare Committee. The identity of the girl had been withheld.

Shridhara Kulkarni, district president, Child Welfare Committee, Vijayapura informed that the girl was converted into Devadasi in the name of Goddess Yellamma Devi. “She has been rescued,” he stated.

According to the preliminary counseling reports, the girl dropped out of school when she was in class V. As her parents died when she was a child, her grandparents were taking care of her and eventually landed at the temple.

Devadasi is one of the major social evils haunting the girl children from the state especially in the underdeveloped North Karnataka region. Under this system, young girls are called ‘Servants of God’. Though centuries ago there was no stigma attached to the system, gradually the system forced women into a lifetime of sexual slavery.
