Vijayapura: The heavy rains that the District has been receiving for the last four days has not only caused damage to the villages located on the banks of Doni River but also has made the people to live in fear of floods.

At least four villages of Bableshwar Taluk have been affected by overflow of the Doni River. The affected villages are Kotyal, Dhanyal, Dashyal and Sarwad. Though villages are not flooded, the agricultural lands attached to these rural areas have been completely flooded from the past 72 hours.

The District Administration has cautioned the villagers from moving nearby rivers and fields. Bableshwar, Tikota, Basavana Bagewadi, Nidagundi, Talikoti and Muddebihal are the most affected Taluks in the District.

According to the District Administration, “An average of 21.125 mm rainfall has been recorded in the last 24 hours in the District. Bableshwar Taluk has reported the highest rain with 66.2mm rain and followed by Tikota with 42.55m, Vijayapura with 41.44m and Devara Hipparagi with 41.3mm. The lowest rain was recorded in Nidagundi with 3.1mm rain in the last 24 hours.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Campaign Committee Chief and Bableshwar MLA M. B. Patil has appealed to the District Administration to carry out the flood survey in the affected areas at the earliest and provide flood relief as per the norms.

Deputy Commissioner Vijayamahantesh  Danammanavar visited flood-affected villages and took stock of the situation. He also interacted with the farmers and villagers about the possible flood situation in the area. He assured people of carrying out the survey and providing compensation for the loss.

With the entire District receiving non-stop showers from the last one week, the farmers are in a state of worry as agricultural lands are almost flooded with heavy rain. The farmers have sowed toor dal, sunflower, cotton and other major Kharif crops, where all of them are staring at loss this season due to heavy rains.

Prakash Chauhan, Joint-Director of the Department of Agriculture, said that, “As per the primary survey, the crop loss is estimated at about 2,000 hectares in the region. If rain continues for another two or three days, it will affect toor-dal growers badly, which is a major Kharif crop in this region. The sunflower and cotton have been badly affected.”

“The agriculture fields located alongside the Doni River are largely hit. The detailed survey will be carried out at the earliest. However, Indi, Chadachan and Sindagi region has been hardly affected,” detailed JD Chauhan.

With Doni River in state, the traffic at State Highway that connects Talikoti and Vijayapura has been diverted via Muddebihal Town as the temporary bridge has been submerged. It is one of the main State Highways that connect Telangana and Raichur and Yadgir District of the State.

However, no loss of life and cattle were reported due to rain. With regard to damages to the houses, the District Administration is carrying out a survey.
