Vijayapura: Heavy rain takes 1 life, damages 20 houses in District

Vijayapura: At least one killed and over 20 houses either fully or partially collapsed due to incessant showers from the past 72 hours in the District.

A 55-year-old Jainabi N. Sipai, a resident of Hunshayal Village near Devara Hipparagi, succumbed after a lightning struck her while she went for cattle grazing in the outskirts of the Village on Wednesday August 3. This is the first casualty reported due to rain this season in the District.

According to the District administration, “An average of 16.38 mm rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours in the region. Talikoti recorded the highest rainfall with 35.6 mm and followed by Bableshwar 27.03 mm and Sindagi recorded the lowest rain with 9.3 mm.”

“A total of 20 houses have either fully or partially collapsed due to showers in the last one week in the District. Among the total house damages, 15 houses have been damaged in the last 24 hours, where five have been reported from Vijayapura, three in Indi and remaining in other Taluks. However, no animal casualties have been reported in the region.”

As per the weather forecast by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), “Vijayapura is likely to experience moderate to heavy rains coupled with thunderstorms for the next one week. A 16.38 mm rainfall has been recorded across the District in the last 24 hours.”

Meanwhile, waterlogged into houses in many low-lying areas due to heavy rains in the City. The officials from the District Administration visited the houses and took stock of the situation.

With regard to the crop damage, the officials are still assessing the damage. However, the report from various villages is claiming loss of standing plantations such as pomegranate and grape, claimed District Administration.

The District Administration said that the compensation for the person that succumbed and houses damaged due to natural calamity will be given as per the norms of SDRF.
