Vijayapura: As Monday October 17 was the last day for the filing of nomination papers for the coming City Corporation elections, the political activities were taking place at a brisk pace, mainly within the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.
Since the competition is apparently between both these parties in the election, the lobbying for the tickets was intense among the aspirants of both parties.
According to the sources, meetings and confabulation for the selection of candidates for the polls lasted till the night of Sunday October 16 when aspirants were making every effort to get their names included in the final list of the party’s official candidates.
Since it is an open secret that the BJP is riddled with factions, mainly of MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and his bete noire, Appu Pattanshetty, aspirants of both sides reportedly did not leave any stone unturned to get the names included in the list.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Yatnal has succeeded in getting a lion’s share in selecting the candidates as he got at least 13 selected who are his supporters.
The situation was no different in the Congress also where the list of aspirants had gone long, making it difficult for the party leaders to select the candidates.
Finally, the list of the candidates was made public, with which, and the anger of the aspirants who could not get the ticket became known to all. The aspirants who could not secure the ticket from their desired parties have decided to contest on the ticket of other regional parties as independent candidates. Those who got the ticket did not delay in filing their nomination papers with their supporters and fans.
The election will be held on October 28 while the counting will be held on October 31.
