Vijayapura: The controversy over displaying a picture of V. D. Savarkar by the BJP supporters that started from Shivamogga recently, has now reached Vijayapura District with the BJP leader pasting several pictures of Savarkar at the District Congress Committee office on Monday August 22.

The matter came to light in the early morning itself, when it was reported that some persons have pasted the picture of Savarkar on the walls of the DCC office.

Following this, on the one hand, Congress not only held a protest against the BJP but also called a press conference to condemn the action.
DCC president and Former MLA, Raju Algur took strong exception to the action where BJP Youth Wing Leader Basavaraj Hugar allegedly pasted the pictures and later reportedly admitted to the action.

Addressing at a hurriedly called press conference, he said that Algur said that Congress never accepts Savarkar as a freedom fighter. “ The man who sought clemency from British rule not once but for about five times when he was jailed in Andaman, does not deserve to be called a patriot or freedom fighter. The Congress has always been opposing the ideology of Savarkar and we will continue to oppose it,” he declared.

Demanding the immediate arrest of Hugar who has allegedly pasted the pictures, Algur said that if the Police fails to arrest him, then Congress will not keep quiet.

“ The Congress will intensify the agitation by pasting the pictures of all those freedom fighters including Tipu Sultan who have been opposed by the BJP,” he added.

He said that the BJP has now stooped to the low of pasting pictures of the Congress office as the party leaders are worried about losing polls in upcoming Assembly polls.

After witnessing the huge success of the 75th birthday bash of Former Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, the BJP leaders are frustrated and releasing that they are losing ground. In frustration, they are doing all such mischievous acts.

Sensing their defeat, the BJP is trying to mislead the people by raising controversial issues in the State, he said.

Congress leader Abdul Hamid Mushrif, Mohammed Rafiq Tapal and others were present.

Later, the leaders went to attend a march called to protest against the throwing of an egg over Siddaramaiah recently by some BJP workers in Madikeri.

While the Congress leaders were away from the office and protesting at M. G. Circle of the city, the BJP members took out a protest march to picket the Congress office. Dozens of party workers led by District President R. S. Patil Kuchabal joined the protest where they even breached the barricades and reached the DCC office.

As the police were trying to prevent them from reaching the office, the members overpowered the police and reached the office where several of them even pasted some photos of Savarkar.

The police not only removed the posters but also made preventive arrests of the BJP workers who were shouting slogans against Congress and Siddaramaiah. They raised slogans in favour of Savarkar.

Later, when Algur and other Congress leaders came back to the DCC office, they expressed anguish over the incident and took the police to task for allowing the BJP leaders to reach the office and paste the pictures.

“ When you already knew that they were coming, why did you not stop them on the way itself? Why did you allow them to reach the office and paste the picture? It gives a message that you are working on the behest of the BJP government,” alleged Algur.

Later, he said that the Congress leaders have gone to Jal Nagar Police Station to file a case against Hugar. The police however said that they will take legal action against Hugar if they receive a complaint against him
