Vijayapura: To mark the 75th Independence Day, Zilla Panchayat is rejuvenating at least 75 lakes under the Amrit Sarovara Yojana across the District.

Taking up the work under this Yojana, the Zilla Panchayat has already identified and carried out surveys of as many as 75 lakes through google maps and Composite Landscape Assessment and Restoration Tool (CLART) application. Among total lakes planned to revive, work on 15 lakes are aimed to be completed by Monday August 15.

As per the directions of ZP Chief Executive Officef Rahul Shinde, the authorities are not only developing the lakes but also cleaning the resources of tanks like streams and riverbeds. Along with rejuvenating lakes the ZP is also stressing on increasing the green-cover surrounding the lakes and its beautification.

As a part of reviving lakes, the silt in all the lakes will be removed, stone pitching will be done surrounding the lakes as well as a mechanism will be set-up for the inflow and outflow of water from these lakes. The works in four out of 15 lakes have already been completed in the region. The remaining 12 lakes will be rejuvenated by Independence Day.

It is one of the State Government initiatives to mark the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in rural areas. In order to revive these lakes, the Zilla Panchayat is utilising the funds available under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

With rejuvenating the lakes, the State Government is aimed at restoring the natural water bodies in rural areas, rainwater harvesting, increasing the groundwater table and addressing the water needs for domestic, drinking and agricultural activities.

ZP CEO Rahul Shinde, said that, “Vijayapura is a rain-scarred District. Any work that can help in rainwater harvesting will also help to carry out proper water management. Amrit Sarovara Yojana is an important flagship scheme, which will largely benefit not only the rural areas but also the District on the whole. This yojana will bring back life to water bodies in the rural areas.”

“The works are being carried out at a quick pace by ensuring quality work in all the identified 75 lakes. In the first phase the 15 lakes will be inaugurated on Independence Day. We have also planned to hoist the National Flag at all these 15 lakes to mark Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Ex-servicemen and elders of the respective villages will grace the occasion,” detailed CEO Shinde.
