Bengaluru: The city traffic police are all set to install ‘adaptive traffic signal lights’ at 35 major junctions across Bengaluru.

The traffic signals will be sensor-based. Traffic officials said that work order has been issued to install ‘adaptive traffic signal lights’ in select junctions. The project will cost under Rs 5 crore under B-Trac project. The new system would help in reducing traffic congestion, travel time, pollution and fuel wastage.

“The proposed adaptive traffic signal lights can sense the traffic and change pattern accordingly compared to the traditional traffic signals that have pre-programmed timings,” said Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) R Hithendra.

According to traffic officials, the CCTV cameras will capture traffic density at junctions and transmit them to a central server. The cameras will also calculate the queue of vehicles and change duration of the traffic lights accordingly. Traffic flow will be under check as the Traffic Management Centre will keep an eye on it.

Bengalureans have heartily welcomed the move as that would help the commuters as well as the cops.
