116 jumbos electrocuted between 2009 to 2019 in K’taka

Bengaluru: According to data issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, over 600 elephants died across the country due to electrocution between 2009 and 2019. There have been 116 deaths in Karnataka, 117 in Odisha, and 105 in Assam.

According to a top official from the Karnataka Forest Department, there have been unnatural elephant deaths in the State in recent years. He informed that the numbers have decreased, but 5 to 6 cases of jumbos die from electrocution every year.

In July, four jumbos died in Kodagu while two male elephants died at the Bannerghatta National Park in Bengaluru in October 2020, four more died in other parts of the state in September 2018.
