Bengaluru: Over 700 motorcyclists representing the armed forces, Bengaluru traffic police, Harley Owners Group and other volunteers, roared on the city roads under the campaign to create awareness on using helmets by two-wheeler riders took off on Saturday August 30.
“The city has over 38 lakh two-wheelers — constituting 75 per cent of the motorists, and on an average, one biker is killed in accident every day. Of these, in maximum number of cases, riders have been found to be not warning helmet,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.A. Saleem, who launched the Wear Safety Helmet Campaign.
Police Commissioner N.S. Megharikh said that 201 bikers were killed in the city in the last seven months and a majority of them were in the age group of 18 to 30.
Transport Commissioner Rame Gowda said there had been instances of traffic police themselves not following the helmet rule properly and wearing sub-standard helmets.
