After pythonic potholes claimed 3 lives, BBMP targets 1600 potholes a day!

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) appears to have woken up from its slumber after Silicon City’s potholes claimed three innocent lives in quick time. Though one cannot single out BBMP for the lapses totally after the city was battered by rains, its poor planning and preparedness to counter adverse situations were found wanting.

After holding a meeting with asphalting contractors, chief engineers, executive and assistant executive engineers on October 8, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad announced that the corporation was hopeful of closing 16,000 potholes that dot the city’s roads in 10 days’ time even if rain gods show no mercy.

“I told the staff that even if it rains, all the potholes should be filled up in the next 10 days i.e, at the rate of 1600 potholes a day on war footing”, said Prasad.

Contractors aware of all nitty-gritties sought more time, it is gathered and a clear picture will emerge only after a meeting to review the situation next Sunday, October 15.

“In the areas where it’s not raining, the hot-mix will be used, while in areas where it is, we will use a cold-mix,” Prasad clarified.

“While the hot-mix can only be used in warm and sunny weather, the cold-mix can be applied even when it rains. For the cold-mix, an emulsion with gravel is used to fill potholes. Its lifespan, however, is only 2-3 months, as it is a temporary measure,” Prasad explained.

“In another three days, all details of the contractors will be put up on the BBMP website,” said Prasad adding this measure was to keep tab on the work in progress.

“If we make road construction authorities such as NHAI, PWD and Municipal Corporation criminally liable with penalty for accidents, there will be a sense of fear among officials who will ensure pothole-free roads and scientific humps,” D Roopa, DIG and Commissioner, Road Safety and Traffic, had stated recently referring to the spate of accidents on state roads.

Meanwhile, the state government has proposed four key changes to the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill that is pending before a select committee of the Rajya Sabha as it proposes criminal liability to hold construction authorities directly responsible.
