Bengaluru: An alert security guard foiled an attempt to rob the ATM machine at Tigalarapalya, Tavarekere here, on Friday.
Lokesh, a private security guard who was on night duty, caught the miscreant red-handed when he was trying to break open the teller.
The miscreant has been identified as Chandrashekhar (30), an employee of a garments company,. He tried to break open the teller machine at the HDFC ATM kiosk at around 2.45 a.m., when Lokesh left the kiosk unattended.
The police said that Lokesh went out to relieve himself and have tea with two other security guards in the neighbourhood. On returning, he found a man trying to break open the teller machine.
The security guard caught the thief and immediately alerted other security guards, who informed the police on night patrol. The police soon rushed to the spot and arrested Chandrashekhar.
Chandrashekhar, who was in an inebriated state when apprehended, was successful in breaking open the cover and damaging the screen of the teller machine using a cutting plier. However, he was not able to steal the money stored in the teller machine, the police added.
