Bengaluru: Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Saturday February 26 said that hijab is mandatory in Islam and that prohibiting Muslim students from wearing it violated Article 25 of the Constitution, which states about freedom of practicing religion.

According to a statement issued by Jamiat, a meeting of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Working Hind’s Committee (Arshad Madani faction) under the leadership of Maulana Arshad Madani was held at the organisation’s central office here, during which important social and contemporary issues were discussed in detail.

Madani said that some “so-called educated people” are giving the false idea that hijab is not required in Islam and that it is not mentioned in the Quran. “The Holy Quran and Hadith contain Islamic guidelines on hijab that clearly state that hijab is mandatory in Shariah,” he added.

In terms of the constitutional issue, he claims that prohibiting Muslim students from wearing the hijab violates Article 25 of the Constitution, which grants minorities rights. India does not have a state religion, but all citizens have complete freedom to practise their faith, said Jamiat.

Madani further stated that there is an urgent need for schools and colleges where Muslim students can receive higher education in a religious setting without discrimination or hindrance. He also urged people to build additional schools and institutions for boys and girls where they can receive a proper education in a religious environment.
