Bengaluru: ‘Diwali’, known as the ‘festival of lights’, has an old relationship with firecrackers owing to the belief that the sound will clear all the negative power and evil elements. Now, however, we know that bursting firecrackers causes air pollution due to the resulting smoke that is generated.

According to recent reports from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bengaluru is considered to be the most polluted city in the state as evidenced by the samples collected from seven areas of the city.

The samples collected from October 27 to 29 have shown a sharp rise in air pollution, resulting in a major drop in the city’s air quality. The air pollution percentage has risen to 18 percent.

According to the reports based on the ‘Air Quality Index’ (AQI), Majestic Railway Station has recorded and AQI of 111, Hebbal – 71, Jayanagar 5th Block – 90, S G Halli – 85, Kavika Mysore Road – 76, Central Silk Board – 67 and Nimhans – 69.

If the AQI, as per the pollution control board, is between 0-50, then it bares less effect on one’s health, 50-100 will cause respiratory issues, 101-200 will result in lung-related issues, heart issues and even respiratory infection in children.

Meanwhile, the count of injured has reached 124, with some even losing their eyes and getting severely injured.
