Bengaluru: Following several fatal cases of road accidents, the state government, in a recent announcement revealed that helmets will be made compulsory for pillion riders as well.

The government has taken measures to amend the Motor Vehicle Act related to the wearing of helmet. The road transport department has already prepared a draft proposal and has asked the public to register objections if any, within 30 days from September 18 when the draft was made public.

Currently, wearing a helmet is compulsory for two-wheeler riders in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalburgi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi corporation limits. In Udupi, helmets will be compulsory for students from October 1.

The government has the intention of extending the rule to the entire state, it is learnt. As a step in the same direction, it will make helmets compulsory for pillion riders too.

It is said that even children who ride pillion will not be exempted. Keeping two helmets will become a necessity then.

Kerala, Delhi, Chandigarh, Gujarat and Maharashtra have made helmets compulsory for pillion riders. There has been demand from some quarters to do the same in Karnataka since 2013.
