Bengaluru: “More than 8 lakh people and 1.5 crore families will be in trouble if the online pharmacy is approved”, said M K Mayanna President, Bruhath Bengaluru Chemist and Druggists Association (BBCDA).

Speaking during a press conference at Press club he said that a bandh will be observed on October 14 in a protest against the online sale of medicines by BBCDA supporting AIOCD.

BBCDA has categorically stated that sale of Medicine via the internet is not in accordance with the present Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules.

“By giving approval for an online pharmacy the public will be able to get any medicines without any prescriptions and by uploading a single prescription to different websites a single person can orders multiple times”, he said and added that this will negatively impact the youth as there would be more chances of purchasing drugs for wrong and illegal purposes.

BBCDA condemns e-pharmacy, because the concept of health for all by the year 2020 will be defeated by allowing an e-pharmacy that only tech savvy people can access. “The poor will be deprived of the quality medicine, since these online portals will not be interested to operate in remote villages and 2 and 3 tier cities”, he said.

While the bandh will be held without any obstacles, keeping in mind the emergency requirement of Medicines to the general public, all the pharmacy outlets functioning from government hospitals, private hospitals, nursing homes and all inpatient sectors area exempted from participating in the Bandh.

K Harish Kumar General Secretary, C K Satyanath were present in the conference.
