Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council, on Saturday, February 29, imposed a ban on protests or demonstrations of any kind in front of the Town Hall.
The ban, which has been imposed with immediate effect, comes after the city has been seeing wave after wave of protests, rallies and demonstrations, adversely affecting traffic.
The BBMP also wrote to Bengaluru City Commissioner of Police to permit protests and other demonstrations only in the Freedom Park.
Commenting on the decision, Mayor Goutham Kumar said that the agitations in front of the Town Hall have been causing a lot of inconvenience for the programmes being held at the venue and also affect the free flow of traffic in the area.
“We decided to ban protests and rallies in front of the Town Hall to protect its sanctity and purpose and to decongest traffic,” he added, according to a report by DHNS.
The Opposition in the BBMP has, however, opined that the ban is a crackdown on the CAA protests. Condemning the move, Leader of the Opposition in the BBMP Abdul Wajid told the media that the state government is curtailing the people’s fundamental rights by this ban.
