Bengaluru: In a rather laudable move to battle plastic menace, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has banned usage of single-use plastic materials in its offices and in civic initiatives. With this, no plastic carry bags, bottles, plates, cups, spoons, straws or table spreads will be used at any of the BBMP events.

A circular in this regard was issued on Saturday by BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

“Single-use packaged drinking water bottles and other single-use plastic disposables are banned in all the BBMP offices, including the head office, and also in all public programmes organised by the BBMP,” the circular read adding that the ban would be in place with immediate effect.

With the ban, the BBMP now intends to use only steel ware and will acquire the same soon with a budget provision.

It may be recalled that a special guideline was issued in September to all the wedding and banquet halls to stop usage of plastic and had recommended the use of steel ware.
