Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) would take all measures to develop the lakes in and around Bengaluru, according to Mayor G Padmavathi.

Speaking with reporters here on Thursday after inspecting Kalkere and Horamavu Agara lakes, Mayor Padmavathi said all the lakes that come under the BBMP’s jurisdiction would be developed shortly. “I want the officials in-charge for lakes to take all measures to prevent sewage flowing into the lakes. They have to safeguard the lakes from pollution and encroachment. I am happy with the developmental works at Kelkere lake. Till now 70 per cent of the developmental works have been completed and the remaining works would be completed shortly. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the developed Kalkere lake,’’ the mayor said.

Meanwhile, some of the residents complained against the residential apartment complexes for letting sewage into the lake. They said the lake was polluted due to the sewage from the nearby residential apartment complexes. They also complained to the mayor about the wastage of tax-payers’ money by taking up fencing work at the lake for the second time. The mayor chided the BBMP engineers for neglecting the lake. “The BBMP engineers should not neglect the lakes since these the lifeline for local residents. I want the BBMP engineers to ensure no pollution of lakes,’’ she said.
